5 Top Signs It’s Time For a New Hot Tub

If you invest in a quality hot tub brand and are faithful with maintenance, you should enjoy your spa for many years to come.

But not even a high-quality, well-maintained hot tub can last forever. If your spa is showing these signs of wear and tear, it’s likely time to start shopping for a new hot tub.

1. It’s Old

If your hot tub is only five to 10 years old and is in need of repair, it’s likely worth fixing. A good hot tub should last 15 years or more and repairs are always cheaper than buying new. If, however, your hot tub has been around for 15 years or more, repairs are rarely worth it.

If the issue is minor and the repair cheap, yes, otherwise, you’re wasting money on a spa that’s well past its prime.

2. It Needs Constant Repairs

If your hot tub requires repairs more often than not, it may be time to replace your unit. Not only can replacing spa parts get pretty expensive, but constant issues can erode your enjoyment of your spa.

Browse our hot tub owner resource section for hot tub manuals and troubleshooting guides to help you determine if repairs are feasible.

3. Repairs Are No Longer Effective

If repairs done to your spa don’t seem to hold up, it could be due to a lack of available parts. If your spa is old or is not from a common manufacturer, that makes repairs even more difficult for your hot tub technician.

He or she simply may not have the knowledge needed to make the repair in such cases.

4. Increased Cost of Utilities

If your spa is an older model, it may not be energy efficient — even with a hot tub cover in use. A well-maintained cover may be designed to keep the heat in your hot tub, but that can’t compensate for a spa being 20 years old.

The bottom line is this: with the ever-increasing cost of utilities, choosing not to upgrade will likely mean expensive electric bills.

5. It’s Leaking

A leak is one of the most difficult repairs to give a quote on. That’s because water will often flow along the outside of the pipes, making it difficult to see where the leak originated. Exacerbating the problem is that the spray foam insulation used inside most hot tubs can mask a leak for some time, resulting in serious problems.

And, the longer the leak occurs, the more saturated the spa’s insulation becomes. If your technician can’t give you an exact quote, or he says all of the spray foam insulation needs to be replaced, you can expect a hefty repair bill. When that’s the case, it’s usually better to start over with a new spa.

Deciding whether to repair or replace an old hot tub can be a very difficult decision. With this list in hand, you’ll be better able to gauge what is fixable and what is not.
